Description
The Milky Way drifts quietly across the skies as if in reverence and remembrance of the thousands of Japanese incarcerated in this concentration camp.
After Pearl Harbor was bombed, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order in 1942 that forced Japanese living in California into internment or concentration camps. One such camp was in Manzanar, California.
Of the 120,000 Japanese people who were uprooted from their homes, possesions and jobs, the majority of them were American citizens. Living conditions were harsh. Weather conditions were windy all year around with freezing cold temperatures in the winter and blazing hot in the summer. Snow can be seen on the mountains in the distance.
During the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, several thousand Nisei soldiers (Japanese who were born in America) rushed to defend Hawaii. In 1943 when the Army asked for volunteers to serve, the Nisei soldiers enlisted in droves. Nearly 26,000 Japanese Americans served in the US military during WWII.
This camp closed in 1945. This guard tower and search light can be seen from Highway 395. It is part of the Manzanar National Historic Site operated by the US National Park Service.
