Description
The gondolas of Venice have been in operation since the 11th century. The graceful curves of the risso on gondolas's stern (back) are shaped like a seahorse is said to mimic the shape of Giudecca Island.
The fero at the bow (front) of the boat can be seen behind and to the left of the risso. It's shape is reminiscent of a comb, however the six teeth represent six quarters of Venice (San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Castello, Dorsoduro and Cannareggio). The tooth that faces the inside of the boat represents Guidecca Island. The curved top symbolizes the Cappello del Doge (Doge's hat).
